授業の概要・目的 Knowledge is a social phenomenon: most of our knowledge comes from teachers, peers, news, and experts, and we calibrate our opinions with these held in the society we live in. Social epistemology is a recent development in philosophical epistemology that deals with such collective or social dimensions of knowledge. In this class we will read collective essays on social epistemology and look into some of its major issues, including whether we should trust other’s testimony, when novices can rely on experts, how to solve disagreement among peers, how to form a collective belief, how issues of gender and diversity affect epistemology, etc.
到達目標 At the end of this course, students should have
* the ability to analyze philosophical texts and to identify the argumentative structure.
* the ability to write a philosophical essay.
* a working understanding of some key issues of social epistemology.
授業計画と内容 In the first few weeks the lecturer will give a general interaction of social epistemology and some of its key questions. In the remaining weeks students give a presentation and lead discussions on the topic of their choice. Depending on the size of the class, we form small groups of two or three students. Each group is responsible for at least one presentation, and each member of the group must turn in a short essay on the week of their presentation.
