授業の概要・目的 Some disputes in philosophy are about facts, while others are about words. But the distinction is not always clear-cut, and since the so-called "linguistic turn" in the mid twentieth century, the distinction is often deliberately ignored. We examine the issue of verbal disputes versus substantive disputes and gain appreciation of how it affects philosophical discussion. We try to do so with an eye toward helping students acquire solid background in the fundamentals of analytic philosophy to maximize the quality of their study in all areas of philosophy.
到達目標 We aim to obtain deep and accurate mastery of the contemporary analytic philosophical method by studying the relation between verbal disputes and substantive disputes. We strive to cultivate philosophical and linguistic abilities to enable us to engage in intellectual discussion of the highest degree of sophistication in English.

We read three articles, listed below, and carefully examine the arguments found in them.
