授業の概要・目的 We will read the sections of the 17th century Nyayasiddhantamuktavali of Visvanatha with excerpts from the Dinakari and Ramarudri commentaries. The purpose of this class is to become familiar with the language an style of the modern Nyaya school by reading one of the most popular primers. The focus will be on learning the technical terminology and the basic method of analysis by looking at the definitions of the valid means to cognition and related topics.
到達目標 Students will learn how to read the later forms Sastric Sanskrit and discuss the prerequisites expected from the intended reader. At first students will focus on learning the fundamentals of the new style of navyanyaya analysis. Then students will learn to analyze definitions more precisely by employing the newly introduced typology of qualifiers such as avacchedaka, visesana, visesya, prakara etc. The final goal is for students to become able to successfully parse the basic definitions of the valid means of cognition.
授業計画と内容 Week 1-2: The history of Inferential Pervasion (vyapti).
Weeks 3-8: The definitions of vyapti in the Nyayasiddhantamuktavali.
Weeks 9-14: Analysis of definitions.
Week 15: Summary and conclusion.
成績評価の方法・観点 Evaluation is based on regular attendance, participation in class discussions and by asking relevant questions. A short essay touching on any issue in the texts we have read and discussed is to be submitted by week 15.
履修要件 Ability to read basic Sanskrit.
