Applied Pharmacology

Highlights of this Course
This course includes the most important part of pharmacology, especially focusing on the drugs used for life-style-related diseases. The goal of study will be indicated at the beginning of the class as a list of 55 drugs.

Course Description
This course emphasizes the molecular basis of pharmacology and clinical application of medical drugs used for diseases in cardiovascular system, blood, urinary tract, airway, and gastrointestinal tract. Members of the class are required to have basic knowledge of physiology and biochemistry.

1. Introduction : The goal of study indicated by a drug list; guidance of the national examination for pharmacist
2. Antiarrhythmic drugs : Signal transduction of heart; classification of antiarrhythmic drugs based on the ion channel actions
3. Pharmaceutical treatments of heart failure : Pathophysiology of congestive heart failure; from cardiac glycosides to new drugs
4. Pharmaceutical treatments of myocardial ischemia : Disease states of angina pectoris; coronary relaxants and preventive drugs
5. Antihypertensive drugs (1) : Epidemiology of hypertension; multiple drug targets and mechanism of action of antihypertensive agents
6. Antihypertensive drugs (2) : Selection of antihypertensives by complications; new insights into hypertension
7. Mid-term examination
8. Anticoagulants, thrombolytics and antiplatelet drugs : Mechanism of platelet aggregation; coagulation and fibrinolytic systems; anticoagulants, thrombolytics and antiplatelet drugs
9. Hematopoietic agents : Mechanism of anemia; hematopoietic cytokines and biopharmaceuticals
10. Drugs used in the treatment of hyperlipoproteinemia : Ethiology of arteriosclerosis; metabolism of cholesterol and lipoproteins
11. Drugs acting on urinary tracts: edema and diuretics : Edema and diuretics; social aspects of aging and pharmaceutical treatments of dysuria
12. Drugs acting on respiratory system : Pathophysiology of respiration; respiratory stimulants; treatments of bronchial asthma
13. Drugs acting on gastrointestinal tracts : Treatments of peptic ulcer and Helicobacter pylori
